QR Code Not Working: Checking Causes Systematically
If a QR code isn't being recognized, first check contrast, quiet zone, size, and focus. After that, check the payload, logo, output quality, and the target app.
A Short Decision Tree
Is no pattern being detected at all? Check contrast, a clear quiet zone, focus, and reflections. Is a pattern detected but no meaningful content opens? Check the payload, destination address, and app compatibility.
- Increase contrast between foreground and background
- Keep at least the recommended margin clear
- Output the code larger or with less data
- Shrink or remove the logo
- Check the print for damage and distortion
- Verify the URL and format of the payload
Payload and Input
A properly generated file can still point to a wrong URL, phone number, or coordinate. The target content must be reachable and correct independently of the QR pattern.
Print and Screen
On screens, reflections, low brightness, and moiré can cause issues. When printing, pixelation, paper, color, and warping are relevant factors.
Test Again After Fixing
